What to Wear and How to Prepare for Your Maternity Photoshoot – Gold Coast & Brisbane

Introduction

Your pregnancy is one of life’s most incredible journeys — emotional, empowering, and over in the blink of an eye. A maternity photoshoot is more than just pretty pictures; it’s a celebration of your strength, your story, and the life growing within you. Whether you’re feeling radiant or a little unsure about stepping in front of the camera, this guide will help you feel confident, prepared, and beautiful.

As a Gold Coast and Brisbane maternity photographer, I’ve photographed hundreds of expecting mums, and I’m here to walk you through exactly what to wear, how to prepare, and what to expect so your maternity session feels relaxed, meaningful, and unforgettable.

A classic fitted turtleneck in studio is a favourite for that modern, editorial feel.

When to Book Your Maternity Photos

I recommend scheduling your maternity shoot between 30 and 34 weeks. This is the sweet spot where your bump is beautifully round and visible, but you’re still relatively comfortable moving around and posing. If you're expecting multiples or have a high-risk pregnancy, we may schedule earlier — around 28–30 weeks.

Tip: Book early, especially if you're hoping for a weekend slot or sunset session!

What to Wear for Your Maternity Session

Your outfit plays a huge role in how you feel during your shoot — and how the final images look. Here’s what photographs beautifully:

Flattering Styles:

  • Flowy dresses with empire waists that accentuate your bump

  • Fitted gowns that hug your curves and show off your silhouette

  • Off-the-shoulder necklines or soft drapes for an elegant, timeless look

  • cozy knits and pants or jeans

  • Blazer & Pants with just a crop top, bra or nothing under blazer

  • Flowy fabrics in studio

Recommended Colours:

  • Neutrals like ivory, beige, blush, taupe, black

  • Earthy tones like olive, rust, or chocolate (especially in outdoor shoots)

  • Soft pastels or dusty hues (which complement skin tones and light beautifully if outdoors

What to Avoid:

  • Loud prints or patterns

  • Neon colors

  • Logos, graphics, or anything overly trendy that may date your images

Partners & Kids:

If your partner or children are joining, coordinate outfits without being too matchy. Stick to complementary tones and avoid clashing patterns.

Hair, Makeup & Feeling Your Best

Even if you don’t normally wear much makeup, a touch of light glam can make a big difference on camera. It evens out skin tones and enhances your natural features — especially in outdoor lighting.

I recommend:

  • Soft waves or a low bun for a romantic, polished look

  • Neutral makeup with a slight pop on the lips or eyes

  • Booking a trusted hair & makeup artist (ask me for referrals — I work with several talented HMUAs on the Gold Coast and Brisbane!)

What to Bring on the Day

  • Extra outfit (if you want variety)

  • Comfortable shoes (we may walk between locations, if outdoors)

  • Lip touch-up, water bottle, small towel (if it’s a warm day)

  • Personal touches: ultrasound photo, baby booties, heirloom item

Beautiful Locations for Maternity Photography

Here are a few of my favourite shoot spots in the Gold Coast and Brisbane areas:

  • Miami Headland – perfect for sunset, ocean views, and earthy vibes

  • The Spit – open beach, soft dunes, and beautiful light

  • Ormeau Hills – for foreste, mountainous backdrops and golden light

  • Studio Session – for a timeless, private, and styled indoor feel

Each location offers a different mood — let’s choose the one that best fits your story and comfort level.

What to Expect During Your Session

Feeling camera-shy? Don’t worry — that’s totally normal! I’ll guide you with gentle posing and natural prompts to help you feel relaxed, confident, and connected. Most clients tell me they walk away feeling empowered..

Final Confidence Tips

  • Embrace the beauty of your changing body

  • Trust your photographer (that’s me!) to highlight your best angles

  • Think of this as a celebration — not a performance

  • Bring your partner or children if it feels meaningful

  • Most importantly: enjoy the moment
