One of the most common questions I get is:

“When should I actually book my maternity photos?”

And the answer isn’t just about dates, it’s about how you want to feel during your session.

As a maternity photographer working across the Gold Coast and Brisbane, I guide my clients to book at a time where they feel both comfortable and beautifully connected to this stage of pregnancy.

The best time for maternity photos

The ideal time to have your maternity photos taken is between 28 and 34 weeks.

At this stage:

Your bump is clearly visible

You’re still relatively comfortable moving around

You haven’t reached that final stage of fatigue

This window allows you to fully enjoy your session while capturing that beautiful, rounded shape.

WHEN SHOULD YOU BOOK YOUR SESSION?

I recommend booking:

👉 Between 12–20 weeks pregnant

This ensures:

You secure your preferred date

You have time to plan wardrobe and styling

You’re not left trying to organise everything at the last minute

WHAT IF YOU’VE LEFT IT LATE?

If you’re already past 30 weeks, don’t worry, it’s still absolutely possible to capture beautiful images.

I often photograph women later in their pregnancy, and with the right pacing and guidance, we can still create a calm, comfortable experience.

If you’re unsure, reach out, I’ll always be honest about what will work best for you.

FACTORS THAT CAN AFFECT TIMING

Every pregnancy is different, so timing isn’t one-size-fits-all.

You may want to book earlier if:

You’re expecting twins

You’re feeling physically uncomfortable sooner

You prefer a smaller, more subtle bump

Or slightly later if:

You want a fuller, more pronounced bump

You’re feeling great and comfortable

GOLD COAST & BRISBANE LIGHTING CONSIDERATIONS

The best location isn’t about what’s “popular”, it’s about what feels right for you.If you’re planning a beach maternity session on the Gold Coast or Brisbane, timing also depends on light.

The most flattering sessions take place:

At sunrise (soft, calm, quiet)

At sunset (warm, golden light)

This creates the soft, natural look you see in my work.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER YOU BOOK?

Once your session is booked, everything becomes simple.
You’ll be guided through:
What to wear
Location options
How your session will flow
So by the time your shoot arrives, you feel relaxed, prepared, and ready to enjoy the experience.

FINAL THOUGHT

There’s never a “perfect” time, only the right time for you.
The most important thing is not letting this season pass without documenting it.
Because one day, these images won’t just be for you
they’ll be part of your child’s story too.
